Mathematics and Applied Mathematics Minor

The Math Minor and Applied Math Minor are good choices for majors in a natural or social science seeking significant exposure to mathematics beyond calculus.

Please note, students must meet the minimum GPA requirement of 2.0 to graduate with any major or minor from the department.

All classes counting toward the degree must be taken for a letter grade. Additionally, a letter grade of "D" in a prerequisite course indicates insufficient preparation for the follow up course and we recommend that you retake the course. Major/Minor GPA will be calculated using the better of the grades when a student repeats a course.

  • Math 111: Calculus I
  • Math 112: Calculus II
  • 5 additional Math courses (3 credits or more): At the 200-level or above
    • Note: Excludes Math 207, Math 210, and Directed Study

  • Math 111: Calculus I
  • Math 112: Calculus II
  • Math 211: Multivariable Calculus  
  • Math 221: Linear Algebra
  • Math 212: Differential Equations
  • 2 courses chosen from the following:
    • Math 315: Numerical Analysis (CS 170 is a prerequisite)
    • Math 344: Differential Geometry (Math 250 is a prerequisite)
    • Math 345: Math Modeling (Math 250 is a prerequisite)
    • Math 346: Linear Optimization (CS 170 is a prerequisite)
    • Math 351: Partial Differential Equations
    Effective Spring 2025, additional electives include:
    • Math 300: Mathematics of Data Science (CS or Math 170 is a prerequisite)
    • Math 347: Non-Linear Optimization (Math 250 is a prerequisite)
    • Math 352: PDE’s in Action
    • Math 361: Mathematical Stats I
